A Standard American Diet “S.A.D.” coworker, out of the blue, decided to try a raw fruit and plant-based diet modeled after mine for the next few weeks just to see how he feels. I could not believe it when he told me!!
This is why I eat with my coworkers (even when their food saddens me, repulses me, and certain comments make me feel uncomfortable). This is why I do not hide my lifestyle or feel shame or embarrassment like I need to apologize for my choices. Visibility and normalizing creates and inspires experimentation and, perhaps, change.
We talked about how most people just eat the S.A.D. because it’s our social conditioning and how we are raised (introduction to the system of Carnism [see Dr. Melanie Joy] – it’s not our fault, we were just raised this way, but now we are waking up to the consequences… cruelty, diseases, pollution, destruction of the planet, and overall just feeling like poop). He seemed to really get it.
My hope is that he has an easy initial detox (yes, I did warn him), and starts feeling and seeing unbelievable improvements within his few week trial run. Even if he doesn’t stick to it, I bet he will be more likely to continue making gradual and healthier choices as he goes along. Most importantly, I hope he realizes his power to change his future and choose his course going forward. We do not have to be perpetual victims of our upbringing. We can learn the lessons and evolve to benefit everyone.
