Last night was Date Night at Whole Foods with my love. We sat down in the eating area with our vegan and raw fruitarian meals, when a couple with their toddler sat down next to us. Both adults sat on one side of the table and they placed the toddler on the other side with a single cupcake. This appeared to be the very purpose for their visit.
They encouraged this little girl to eat her pretty cupcake and attempted to keep her focused on the task. She didn’t seem entirely interested in eating the cupcake, but with gentle and continuous persuasion from her parents, she managed to munch through about half the cupcake very slowly with little bites and licks making a mess. The little girl clearly had enough and tried to shove the cupcake back to her parents. We heard the mother say, “I guess you know sugar is bad for you.” My eyes met my love’s eyes, and we shared a knowing look. The parents devoured the remainder of the cupcake.
It wasn’t five minutes later, when they picked up the now squirming little girl and said something about the “sugar kicking in” as they left their table and the mess they made behind. Her parents seemed to remain lost in their own fog of monotony, although appearing somewhat satiated by having successfully fed their wriggling toddler a cupcake.
